What is the CAT 2026 Selection Process?

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is the gateway to India's prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and several other top business schools. However, cracking CAT is only the first step — the actual admission journey involves multiple carefully structured stages that assess candidates well beyond their exam scores.

Stage 1: CAT 2026 Examination

The selection process begins with the CAT examination itself, conducted annually by one of the IIMs on a rotational basis. CAT tests candidates on three sections — Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Stage 4: Personal Interview (PI)

The Personal Interview is one of the most critical stages of the IIM admission process. A panel of faculty and industry professionals evaluates candidates on parameters such as clarity of thought, domain knowledge, awareness of current affairs, career goals, and overall personality. Performance in the PI can significantly influence the final selection outcome.

Stage 5: Final Merit List and Admission Offer

After WAT and PI rounds, IIMs prepare a composite score for each candidate by assigning weightage to CAT score, academic records, work experience, WAT performance, and PI rating. Based on this composite score, a final merit list is prepared and admission offers are extended. Each IIM follows its own weightage formula, which is typically published in the official admission policy.

Key Differences Across IIMs

Aspirants must note that the selection criteria vary significantly across IIMs. For instance, older IIMs such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, and IIM Indore tend to have higher CAT percentile cutoffs, often above 99 percentile for general category candidates. Newer IIMs may have relatively lower cutoffs but still maintain rigorous evaluation standards.
